Robert Litan, Ph.D., J.D.

As Vice President for Research and Policy, Robert Litan leads the Kauffman Foundation’s dynamic entrepreneurship research agenda. He is also a Senior Fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings, where he has been affiliated for over 20 years (and previously was Vice President and Director of Economic Research). Litan has also served as a Staff Economist for the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, as deputy assistant attorney general in the antitrust division of the Justice Department, and as associate director of the Office of Management and Budget. He has consulted for a wide range of private and public sector organizations, including the Department of the Treasury and the World Bank. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics, graduating summa cum laude, from the Wharton School at the  University of Pennsylvania, his J.D. from Yale Law School, and both a master of philosophy and Ph.D. in economics from Yale University. Litan has authored or coauthored more than twenty-five books, including his latest with Carl Schramm and William Baumol, Good Capitalism, Bad Capitalism (Yale, May 2007). His book, Financial Statecraft, with Benn Steil, was named one of the best business books in 2006 by Library Journal. He has also published more than 200 articles in professional journals and magazines.

Michael Loriaux teaches and writes on European unification. His books include France After Hegemony: International Change and Financial Reform (Cornell, 1991), Capital Ungoverned (co-authored: Cornell, 1997), and European Union and the Deconstruction of the Rhineland Frontier (Cambridge, 2008). His current book project is entitled The Europe to Come and the Question of Power.
